BIOGRAPHY BORN FROM A WISH. maria remembers little of her life apart from the worn leather of the seat in heavens night and the pungent smell of hair dye from its bowl. she remembers brief kindness, before him, a choice made to help a man mourning the loss of his daughter. she remembers things that aren’t hers, a little girl in the hospital ward drawing pictures in the fogged glass; the serenity of rosewater park; the fragments of a man’s name, though she can’t place her finger on it.

after meeting james sunderland on rosewater pier and being mistaken for his late wife mary, maria accompanies him throughout silent hill at the cost of her own life and rebirth, desperate to be chosen over mary to leave with him entirely. she fights him as a last resort and inevitably falls to james’ hand when he comes to accept the weight of his actions.maria suffers intense periods of derealisation due to the brief loss of her autonomy, theoretically due to the greater powers overseeing the events in silent hill in order to torment james throughout his purgatory. she fights to retain her own sense of being, having been manifested through mary’s wants and wishes for herself, and a combination of james’ early onset mourning for who his wife was / the suppression of his needs.

CANON DIVERGENCE 01. due to how intentionally ambiguous silent hill is with its narrative, maria is written from my own interpretation of the game, which will more than likely not line up with certain fandom wide interpretations of her character. this includes not following the popular theory that she was created solely out of james’ sexual desires and feelings towards mary. NOTES 01. primary premise follows the plot of both born from a wish and the main campaign of silent hill 2. portrayal follows strong motifs of butterflies, moths and the general concept of rebirth.02. this portrayal is heavily rooted in maria’s struggle with learning and continuing to exist as her own person. this will be heavily referenced and incorporated in certain storylines, especially those involving either james or mary. if you wish to write either with me and have thoughts around their dynamic, reaching out to me is absolutely encouraged so we can strengthen their thread(s) going forward.
